The Wisconsin circuit courts are the general trial courts in the state of Wisconsin. There are currently 69 circuits in the state, divided into 9 judicial administrative districts. In 1853, a separate Wisconsin Supreme Court was created with all members elected state-wide. Initially the court was three members; it grew to five justices in 1878, and to its current size of seven seats in 1907.
The current system was implemented by a 1977 act of the Wisconsin Legislature (1977 Wisconsin Act 187), authorized by an April 1977 referendum to amend the state constitution.
