Southern Railway's 1918 facility, named Peachtree Station but known locally as Brookwood Station, has been Atlanta's only long-distance passenger rail stop since 1970. Amtrak took over Southern's Crescent route in the '70s, which (as of 2015) continues to operate between New Orleans and N.Y. City .
Prior to the arrival of white settlers, Five Points was the intersection of two Creek Indian trails, the Peachtree Trail and the Sandtown Trail. In 1845, George Washington Collier opened a grocery store at what is now Five Points, and the store later served as Atlanta's first post office in 1846.
Atlantic Steel's history dated back to 1901 when it was founded as the Atlanta Hoop Company, with 120 employees, and which produced cotton bale ties and barrel hoops. It became the Atlanta Steel Company, and then in December 1915, the Atlantic Steel Company. [3] From 1908 to 1922 Thomas K. Glenn was the company's president. [4]
