The term “based” was actually derived from the term “basehead” which was used during the 1980s crack epidemic. Part of the reason this happens instead of inventing entirely new words is that it can be kind of funny or ironic to take an existing word and flip its meaning around, or keep the same meaning but apply it to a totally different context.
