    How to Register Your Vehicle and Get Texas Plates. You have 30 days from moving here to register your vehicle. Take your vehicle to a certified Vehicle Inspection station and obtain a passing Texas inspection. Bring your insurance card with you because the inspection station will ask to see proof of insurance.

    Get a Copy of Your Vehicle Title. If a title is lost or destroyed, you may obtain a certified copy of title by following the steps below. If a lien is recorded, the lienholder should complete an application for certified copy of title, or provide you with an original release of lien.

    As part of your vehicle registration you are issued a set of general-issue license plates. The plate number is assigned to you by TxDMV and cannot be personalized. As of November 1, 2016, the State of Texas no longer requires automatically replacing your plates after 7 years.
