The two high schools were merged in 1991 into the Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School. This new school kept John F. Kennedy High School's colors of blue and white and adapted the mascot of the Hawks to replace its abandoned Eagle mascot and Plainview-Old Bethpage High School's green and yellow Gulls.
The school district as a whole was the 2002 winner of the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network and National School Boards Association Award, which honors school districts for excellence in arts education. Syosset was also named a Grammy Signature school [4] for its music programs in orchestra, band, and chorus.
In the mid-20th Century, the Roosevelt Union Free School District, like the hamlet of the same name which it primarily serves, fell victim to real estate blockbusting, leading to the then-predominantly-white neighborhood and district rapidly gaining a large African American community, leading to major racial imbalances and causing a need for additional state funding.
