The certification program for entry-level Athletic Trainers was meant to establish standards to meet in order to enter the profession of athletic training. When the BOC began it was part of the National Athletic Trainers' Association and is now commonly called NATABOC, incorporating both names. In 1989 the BOC became an independent corporation.
The NATA was founded in 1950 when the first meeting of the NATA took place in Kansas City, Missouri.Recognizing the need for a set of professional standards and appropriate professional recognition, the NATA tried to unify certified athletic trainers across the country by setting a standard for professionalism, education, certification, research, and practice settings.
To become an athletic trainer, one must have a master's degree from an accredited professional level education program and then sit for and pass the Board of Certification (BOC) examination. By 2023, all accredited professional programs will be required to provide a master's level education.
The NCSF Board for Certification provides credentials for exercise professionals. Based on role delineation studies, [3] and consistent with the Department of Labor Statistics [4] for fitness trainers and athletic coaches, the board currently offers three credentials – Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Strength Coach, and Sports Nutrition Specialist.
Established in 1987, NASM has gained recognition for its evidence-based approach to fitness and wellness education and has developed a range of programs aimed at enhancing the skills of personal trainers, wellness coaches, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, physical therapists, and other health professionals.
Certifications are usually awarded by professional societies or educational institutes. Obtaining a certificate is voluntary in some fields, but in others, certification from a government-accredited agency may be legally required to perform certain jobs or tasks.
