Elephant Rock is located 42 miles (68 km) northeast of downtown Las Vegas in the Valley of Fire State Park near the park's east entrance. The landform is one of the most photographed attractions within the park. [4] It is set in the Mojave Desert and it is one of the most famous sandstone features in Nevada. [5]
The Valley of Fire State Park is less than an hour from Las Vegas, and worth the trip. It gets its name from the vibrant red Aztec sandstone that's prevalent in the park among the drab limestone.
Valley of Fire is located in the Mojave Desert 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Las Vegas, at an elevation between 1,320–3,009 feet (402–917 m). [5] It abuts the Lake Mead National Recreation Area on the east at the Virgin River confluence. It lies in a 4 by 6 mi (6.4 by 9.7 km) basin.
However, as of 2020, the portion of Valley of Fire Road within the state park boundaries is still maintained by NDOT as a state park road. [11] A 10.5-mile (16.9 km) section of the Valley of Fire Road—the portion between the west and east entrances to the state park—was designated a Nevada Scenic Byway on June 30, 1995. [12]

1998 – A fire occurred in the loop area. By 2003, regrowth has made it difficult to find the burn area. [citation needed] June 25, 2005 – The Goodsprings fire consumed more than 31,600 acres (49.4 sq mi; 128 km 2), burning into Red Rock NCA's southern area. [citation needed]
