The Celtic Interconnector is a 700 MW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine power cable under construction between the southern coast of Ireland and the north-west coast of France. [1] It will be the first such interconnector between the two countries. Trial operation is planned to commence in 2026. [2]
The ESB was established by the fledgling Irish Free State government under the Electricity (Supply) Act, 1927 to manage Ireland's electricity supply after the successful Shannon Scheme at Ardnacrusha. The scheme was Ireland's first large-scale electricity plant – and at the time, it provided 80% of the total energy demands of Ireland.

By 2003, Energia had established itself as Ireland's leading independent energy business supplying over 30% of large industrial electricity requirements.
