A drop tower is a type of amusement park ride incorporating a central tower structure with one or more gondolas attached. In a typical modern configuration, each gondola carrying riders is lifted to the top of the tower and then released to free fall back down to ground level.

The two latest drop towers, installed in 1999 at Kings Island and 2003 at Kings Dominion, are Gyro Drop models with one large circular car, reaching speeds of 67 and 72 mph (116 km/h), respectively. Both the Kings Island and Kings Dominion ride claim to be the tallest Gyro Drop towers in the world.
The ride was shut down roughly a month and a half later to construct the third tower due to the lines for only two towers averaging wait times of roughly 3 to 5 hours. It was the very first "combo tower" from S&S Power, combining the ride actions of both a Turbo Drop and Space Shot in one ride cycle.
The ride received a temporary re-theme in 2017 under the name Drop of Doom featuring virtual reality headsets in partnership with Samsung. At a height of 227 ft (69 m), the ride is the second tallest attraction at Six Flags Great America, behind Sky Trek Tower at 330 ft (100 m).
