After the first settlers arrived in 1809, North Tonawanda became part of the town of Wheatfield, New York in Niagara County, from May 1836. An abortive attempt at a village containing portions in two counties and two towns from January 1854 until April 1857, it was part of the Niagara County/Town of Wheatfield component, with the other portion in Erie County and the Town of Tonawanda.
Tonawanda is a city in Erie County, New York, United States.The population was 15,129 at the 2020 census. It is at the northern edge of Erie County, south across the Erie Canal (Tonawanda Creek) from North Tonawanda, east of Grand Island, and north of Buffalo.

Subsequently, real estate development began in 1890 when the North Park Land Company purchased 30 acres (120,000 m 2) of land near the current Riverside Park (formerly known as Germania Park), which boasts a scenic outlook of the Niagara River. The land was subdivided, and construction of two-family homes started.
After de Kleist was voted in as mayor of North Tonawanda in 1906, Wurlitzer bought him out of the business in 1908. After his term as mayor ended, suffering from ill health, de Kleist retired to Berlin in 1911, dying in Biarritz, in 1913 from a heart attack.
