[2] IBM introduced the Start Interpretive Execution (SIE) instruction (designed specifically for the execution of virtual machines) in 1983 as part of 370-XA architecture on the IBM 3081, as well as VM/XA versions of VM to exploit it.
The Power line of microprocessors has been used in IBM's RS/6000, AS/400, pSeries, iSeries, System p, System i, and Power Systems lines of servers and supercomputers. They have also been used in data storage devices and workstations by IBM and by other server manufacturers like Bull and Hitachi.
IBM's own UNIX variant, AIX is not supported since the OpenPower servers are not licensed for this operating system. There were two models available, with a variety of configurations.
