The college shares its campus with Fergusson College and Jaganath Rathi Vocational Guidance and Training Institute (JRGVTI), both governed by the Deccan Education Society. Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce (BMCC), established in 1943, is closely associated with Fergusson College.
Deccan Education Society, Pune was established in 1884 and registered on 13th August 1885 and by four patriotic visionaries- Vishnu Shastri Chiplunkar, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar and Mahadeo Ballal Namjoshi- who were already recognized as the pioneers of new education in India with the Launch of New English School in Pune in the year 1880.
Inspired by the school's success, the Deccan Education Society was formed in 1884; a year later the Fergusson College was established. An area of 37 acres (150,000 m 2 ) of land was leased for 99-years by Shirole, the erstwhile Patil of the village of Bhamburde on the west bank of the Mutha River .
The college was founded by the Deccan Education Society as Bombay College. The foundation stone was laid by Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve and the college started operating in 1954. In 1960, Bombay College was renamed Kirti M. Doongursee College in a ceremony in the presence of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan , the first Vice President of India .
