It was created on 20 April 1999 from what were formerly the northern and northwestern districts of North Lampung. It has an area of 3,921.63 km 2 and had a population of 406,123 at the 2010 census [ 2 ] and 473,575 at the 2020 census; [ 3 ] the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 489,773 (comprising 250,648 males and 239,125 females).
