In writing Dazai's backstory for the light novels, Asagiri was inspired by a picture that had the real artists Dazai, Ango Sakaguchi, and Sakunosuke Oda. The seemingly natural state of the trio inspired Asagiri to write Osamu Dazai and the Dark Era. Another aspect of the trio that inspired the fiction was how the real Dazai reacted to Oda's death.

The term mainly applied to Ango Sakaguchi, Osamu Dazai and Sakunosuke Oda, however, it also often referred to others, such as Jun Ishikawa, Sei Itō, Jun Takami, Tanaka Hidemitsu and Kazuo Dan. Further, according to Takeo Okuno, the group also included Miyoshi Jūrō and Taiko Hirabayashi.
Oda visits a group of orphans he provides for living in a curry shop. There, Dazai concludes that Mimic is an overseas organisation of gifted individuals that came running from Europe to Japan after being pursued by an English secret organisation The Order of the Clock Tower, and that a storage unit raided by them had its passcode leaked by Ango.
Oda decides to avenge the children by facing Mimic's leader André Gide.
