Ardingly Reservoir is west of Ardingly in West Sussex.The southern end is a 74.5-hectare (184-acre) Local Nature Reserve owned and managed by South East Water. [1] [2]The reservoir feeds the River Ouse located in West Sussex, England 5 miles (8.0 km) north of Haywards Heath.

Filling of the reservoir, Smith Mountain Lake, began on September 24, 1963. In 1964, the first four hydro-electrical generators were installed. The first commercial saturation dives were performed by Westinghouse to replace faulty trash racks at 200 feet (61 m) on the dam in 1965. [4] On March 7, 1966, the reservoir was full.

The north shore of the lake lies entirely in Bedford County. Located along the lake shore at Wirtz, Virginia is the Gwin Dudley Home Site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
