The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), incorporated in June 1975, is an independent nonprofit organization that administers examinations and awards credentials in the areas of diagnostic medical sonography, diagnostic cardiac sonography, vascular technology, physicians’ vascular interpretation, musculoskeletal sonography and midwifery ultrasound.
Generally, credentials are listed from most to least prestigious. A degree, once earned, cannot be taken away. Sometimes, licensure and certifications must be periodically renewed by examination or the completion of a prescribed number of continuing education units (CEUs). EMS providers may also hold non-EMS credentials, including academic degrees.
Recognition of ARDMS programs in providing credentials has also earned the ARDMS accreditation with the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, which is the accrediting arm of the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA). Established in 1977 as a nonprofit organization, NOCA sets quality standards for certifying organizations.
