Richard Louis Proenneke (/ ˈ p r ɛ n ə k iː /; May 4, 1916 – April 20, 2003) was an American self-educated naturalist, conservationist, writer, and wildlife photographer who, from the age of about 51, lived alone for nearly thirty years (1968–1998) in the mountains of Alaska in a log cabin that he constructed by hand near the shore of Twin Lakes.
Gangster island is located in the southwest portion of North Twin lake (originally known as Big Twin Lake). The lake is in the town of Phelps in Vilas County, Wisconsin. [1] According to real estate listings the island covers roughly 10 acres (4.0 ha). [2] The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources surveyed the island in 2002.
In 1930 he built a log cabin, measuring 16 by 20 feet (5 by 6 m), behind the inn overlooking the Cross River. After he completed a second cabin, a Minnesota tourism pamphlet described the site as "Stickney's Resort". By 1936, Stickney had built eight cabins with views of the river and the shores of Lake Superior. [2]
South Twin Lake is located in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in Taylor County, Wisconsin. [1] It is the home of the White Birch regeneration project started by Janet and Carl J. Nelson to support an ecosystem in which white birch saplings can thrive. In 2008 they retired to Oregon.
