Dolores County was created by the Colorado legislature on February 19, 1881, from the western portions of Ouray County, and was named for the Dolores River, which heads up in the county and passes through the county in the Dolores Canyon.

Rico Town Hall or Rico City Hall is a multi-purpose building in the tiny mountain mining town of Rico, Colorado. Rico was formerly the county seat of Dolores County, and the city hall was built as the Dolores County Courthouse in 1892 by a "Mr. Carpenter." At the time Rico was in the middle of a gold boom and had a population of 4,000.

By the time Colorado became a state on August 1, 1876, it had only 26 counties. In January 1877, Routt and Ouray were formed, followed by Gunnison and Custer counties in March. In February 1879, Chaffee County was created. From February 8–10, 1879, Lake county was renamed Carbonate County. In 1881, Dolores County and Pitkin County were created.
Dunton Hot Springs is located in Dolores County, on West Fork Road #38 [5] in Dolores, Colorado, approximately 6 miles (9.7 kilometers) Northwest of the town of Rico, on the bank of the west fork of the Dolores River. The elevation of the hot springs is 8,873 feet (2,704 meters). Paradise and Geyser Hot Springs are located nearby. [1]
