Water is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula H 2 O.It is a transparent, tasteless, odorless, [c] and nearly colorless chemical substance. It is the main constituent of Earth's hydrosphere and the fluids of all known living organisms (in which it acts as a solvent [20]).

  3. Properties of water - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Properties_of_water

When an ionic or polar compound enters water, it is surrounded by water molecules . The relatively small size of water molecules (~ 3 angstroms) allows many water molecules to surround one molecule of solute. The partially negative dipole ends of the water are attracted to positively charged components of the solute, and vice versa for the ...

  4. Chemical bonding of water - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_bonding_of_water

Lewis Structure of H 2 O indicating bond angle and bond length. Water (H 2 O) is a simple triatomic bent molecule with C 2v molecular symmetry and bond angle of 104.5° between the central oxygen atom and the hydrogen atoms.

  5. Hydrogen compounds - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_compounds

Water molecules have two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. While H 2 is not very reactive under standard conditions, it does form compounds with most elements. Hydrogen can form compounds with elements that are more electronegative, such as halogens (F, Cl, Br, I), or oxygen; in these compounds hydrogen takes on a partial positive charge. [1]

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Water

Its chemical formula, H 2 O, indicates that each of its molecules contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms, connected by covalent bonds. The hydrogen atoms are attached to the oxygen atom at an angle of 104.45°. In liquid form, H 2 O is also called "water" at standard temperature and pressure.

If the relative electronegativity is high, compound is ionic. Relative electronegativity is usually low if the atoms in the compound are non metals. In H 2 SO 4 all the atoms are non metals so H 2 SO 4 is covalent. I believe HCl is also covalent even though you said it is ionic because the atoms in HCl (hydrogen and chlorine) are nonmetals.
