The Republic of Korea (commonly known as South Korea) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (commonly known as North Korea) were simultaneously admitted to the United Nations (UN) in 1991. On 8 August 1991, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 702 , recommending both states to the General Assembly for membership.
North Korea became a permanent member of the UN in 1991. [3] Diplomats from North Korea are not allowed to travel outside of the United Nations headquarter district. This means they need permission from the US state department if they want to travel more than 25 miles outside of Manhattan. [4] [5]
