The Draw-A-Scientist Test (DAST) is an open-ended projective test designed to investigate children's perceptions of the scientist. Originally developed by David Wade Chambers in 1983, the main purpose was to learn at what age the well known stereotypic image of the scientist first appeared.
It is also a competition held by the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association, using the same rules as the UIL. Science is designed to test students' knowledge of scientific fact, understanding of scientific principles and the ability to think through scientific problems.

Grades 2 through 8 tests cover mathematics and English/language arts (which includes writing in grades 4 and 7). Grades 9 through 11 cover English/language arts, mathematics, and science.
