The Recollects returned in 1909 and one of the watchtowers was installed again with a belfry. The church of Dumaguete became a cathedral when its eponymous diocese was founded in 1955. This is the main Roman Catholic Church in the region and it is the seat of the Diocese of Dumaguete. Statues of Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke and John can be found above the four pillars which hold the entrance gate of the Cathedral Church area. Forty years later, Dumaguete was created as another parish covering the southern territories and Siquijor, which the Spaniards called Isla de Fuego. Dumaguete was under the territorial jurisdiction of the Diocese of Cebu until 1865, the Diocese of Jaro until 1932 and the Diocese of Bacolod until its creation as a new diocese in 1955. [2]
The present stone church was built in 1884 by Filipino artisans followed by the bell tower in the following year. [1] The construction of the convent was made with coral stones and hardwood, commenced in 1887 and completed in 1891. Both the church and the convent were done under the direction of Recollect priest Father Toribio Sánchez. [2]
