The flowers divide into two types, those with very long, filamentous stamens two or three times as long as the tepals (subgenus Lycoris; e.g. Lycoris radiata), and those with shorter stamens not much longer than the tepals (subgenus Symmanthus Traub & Moldenke; e.g. Lycoris sanguinea).
Lycoris squamigera is an herbaceous plant with abundant and long (up to 12" long and 1" wide) leaves ("clothes") that appear in spring. The leaves are no longer present when the flowers emerge much later, without their "clothes", from the bare ground, hence the name "Naked Ladies".
