Ukraine is urging the U.S. and the EU to sanction a major Russian bank, Gazprombank, that still operates freely due its role in natural gas sales to Europe.
The Gazprom name is a contraction of the Russian words gazovaya promyshlennost (газовая промышленность, gas industry). In January 2022, Gazprom displaced Sberbank from the first place in the list of the largest company in Russia by market capitalization. [4] In 2022, the company's revenue amounted to 8 trillion rubles. [5]
In 2006 Gazprom sold its shares in Leader to the SOGAZ Insurance Company which is controlled by Bank Rossiya. [1] In March 2014, Bank Rossiya sold its indirect control of Leader to Gazfond. [2] Gazfond owns a 45% stake in Leader. [2] As of November 2014, Gazfond is the largest shareholder of Gazprombank which controls Gazprom-Media. [2] [3]
