The Succulent Karoo is an ecoregion defined by the World Wide Fund for Nature to include regions of desert in South Africa and Namibia, [2] and a biodiversity hotspot. The geographic area chosen by the WWF for what they call 'Succulent Karoo' does not correspond to the actual Karoo .
The vegetation types are plotted on the map in as much resolution as is available using a GIS system. [ 1 ] Mapping of the distribution and extent of natural vegetation of South Africa started in 1918 when the Botanical Survey of the Union of South Africa was established.
The park lies about 70 km west of Sutherland and along the border of the Northern Cape and Western Cape in Succulent Karoo habitat; a biodiversity hotspot and one of the most arid regions of South Africa. Monilaria moniliformis, the bunny ear succulent, is a species of flowering plant in the family Aizoaceae. [2] It is native to the southwestern Cape Provinces of South Africa. [1] It is similar to Monilaria obconica, the bunny succulent. A succulent with soft, fuzzy leaves, it is typically found in quartz-fields of the Succulent Karoo. [3] [2]
Namaqua National Park is a South African national park situated on the edge of the Atlantic coast of Namaqualand (an area covering 440,000 km 2 located within the semi-desert Succulent Karoo biome). [ 2 ] [ 3 ] This biome is a biodiversity hotspot with the largest concentration of succulent plants in the world. [ 3 ]
The African sheepbush (Afrikaans: goeiekaroo, "good karoo", [1] Pentzia incana) is a plant native to South Africa and Namibia. It ranges throughout the Succulent Karoo, Nama Karoo, renosterveld, and fynbos, and it is listed under the SANBI Red List as "safe" (LC). [2] The African sheepbush has been imported to Australia.
