The Russian State Library (Russian: Российская государственная библиотека, romanized: Rossiyskaya gosudarstvennaya biblioteka) is one of the three national libraries of Russia, located in Moscow. [2] It is the largest library in the country, second largest in Europe and one of the largest in the world.
It was known as the Imperial Public Library from 1795 to 1917; Russian Public Library from 1917 to 1925; State Public Library from 1925 to 1992 (since 1932 named after M.Y. Saltykov-Shchedrin); and since 1992 as the National Library of Russia (NLR).
The Library's functions were defined: to act as the central historical library of the Russian Federation; to be a state repository of domestic and foreign historical literature in printed or manuscript form; to serve as a research institute in historical bibliography and library science. [1]
