Ammi W. Wright was born and raised on his father's farm in New England. In 1851, he came to Saginaw, and began investing in what was then a frontier town. In 1854, he constructed this house for his family. Over the next two decades, Wright invested in a series of sawmills and other businesses, and his fortunes grew with the fortunes of the city.

In 1904, the Saginaw Board of Public Works hired landscape gardener E. C. Foster of Kalamazoo, Michigan to design the landscaping for the park.
