Dinagat, officially the Municipality of Dinagat (Surigaonon: Lungsod nan Dinagat; Cebuano: Lungsod sa Dinagat; Tagalog: Bayan ng Dinagat), is a municipality in the province of Dinagat Islands, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 10,621.
Dinagat Island is an island located northeast of Mindanao in the Philippines. Until December 2006, it was part of the province of Surigao del Norte . Being its main island, almost all municipalities of the province of Dinagat Islands are located on it.
The town became a part of the province of Dinagat Islands on October 2, 2006, when the province was created from Surigao del Norte by Republic Act No. 9355. However, in February 2010, the Supreme Court ruled that the law was unconstitutional, as the necessary requirements for provincial land area and population were not met.
Since the 2007 redistricting following the separation of Dinagat Islands, the district now comprises the Siargao and Bucas Grande municipalities of Burgos, Dapa, Del Carmen, General Luna, Pilar, San Benito, San Isidro, Santa Monica and Socorro. [4] It also included Dinagat Islands until it was established as a distinct province in 2006. [5]
