Celebration of Tridentine Mass. Pope Paul VI erected the Diocese of Charlotte in 1971, taking its territory from the Diocese of Raleigh. At that time, the Catholic population of the area was just over 34,000. Paul VI named Monsignor Michael Begley from Raleigh as the first bishop of Charlotte. [21]
In 1997, new buildings were built on the plot on West Holding, including a parochial school. In 1999 St. Catherine's founded its second daughter parish, Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Louisburg. [1] In 2001 St. Catherine's purchased over 20 acres of land west of new property for $800,000, building a new school buildings.
The parish also hosts a parochial school, St. Paul Catholic School. [ 2 ] The historic church, built in 1840–1841 and the oldest Catholic church in North Carolina, [ 3 ] is a Greek Revival rectangular frame structure three bays wide and four bays deep covered by a gable roof.
In 1996 the Jesuits accepted pastorship of the parish. It is the only Jesuit Parish in the Diocese of Raleigh. In 1997 the parish started a Hispanic Ministry program and added Spanish masses to the services. The main altar of St. Raphael's contains a relic of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. [11]
