Greek tragedy, as it is presently known, was created in Athens around 532 BC, when Thespis was the earliest recorded actor. Being a winner of the first theatrical contest held in Athens, he was the exarchon , or leader, [ 5 ] of the dithyrambs performed in and around Attica, especially at the Rural Dionysia .
The representation of women in Athenian tragedy was performed exclusively by men and it is likely (although the evidence is not conclusive) that it was performed solely for men as well. [1] The question whether or not women were admitted at theatre is widely contested and tends to polarise fronts. [ 2 ]
