The Embassy of the United States in Brussels is the chief diplomatic mission of the United States in Belgium. The complex of the embassy currently consists of three buildings situated around the Rue Ducale / Hertogsstraat , the Rue Zinner / Zinnerstraat and the Boulevard du Régent / Regentlaan , where the headquarters is (at no. 27).
Consulates-General are staffed by career consulate foreign nationals, usually with full diplomatic protection. Honorary consuls are accredited US citizens or residents who have official standing but are usually part-time [2] [3] The United States Department of State's Chicago regional office serves these missions.
The first predecessor of the current mission was the US diplomatic mission to the European Coal and Steel Community in Luxembourg, which opened in 1956. In 1961, the US Mission to the European Communities was established in Brussels, which later became the United States Mission to the European Union, upon the latter's establishment in 1993. [1]
Since that time, a long line of distinguished envoys have represented American interests in Belgium. These diplomats included men and women whose career paths would lead them to become Secretary of States (Hugh S. Brussels is unique in that it is not only the seat of the Belgian Government, but also of the European Commission, which is the executive wing of the European Union to which countries accredit representatives, and of the NATO. Thus, a country can maintain up to three missions in Brussels: one to Belgium, one to the EU, and one to the NATO.
