A self-extracting archive created using 7-Zip. A self-extracting archive (SFX or SEA) is a computer executable program which combines compressed data in an archive file with machine-executable code to extract the information. Running on a compatible operating system, it does not need a suitable extractor in the target computer to extract the data.
Opening EXE files as archives, allowing the decompression of data from inside many "Setup" or "Installer" or "Extract" type programs without having to launch them; Unpacking archives with corrupted filenames, renaming the files as required; Create self-extracting single-volume archives; Command-line interface [25] Graphical user interface.
RPM files consist of metadata concatenated with (usually) a cpio archive. Newer RPM systems also support other archives, as cpio is becoming obsolete. cpio is also used with initramfs. .shar application/x-shar Shell archive: Unix-like A self-extracting archive that uses the Bourne shell (sh). .LBR .LBR: CP/M DOS A system for storing multiple files.
It supports extracting the contents of a CAB archive files using File Explorer, Setup API, and using the command-line commands expand.exe, [10] extract.exe and extrac32.exe. [11] [12] Other well-known software with CAB archive support includes WinZip, WinRAR or 7-Zip.
ZIP files may be spanned; that is, written to any number of files with a fixed maximum size so that they can be placed on removable media. The program has integration, and can create self-extracting executable archives for redistribution without licensing fees.
A compressed executable can be considered a self-extracting archive, where a compressed executable is packaged along with the relevant decompression code in an executable file. Some compressed executables can be decompressed to reconstruct the original program file without being directly executed.
Thus, when a ZIP file is viewed in a text editor the first two bytes of the file are usually "PK". (DOS, OS/2 and Windows self-extracting ZIPs have an EXE before the ZIP so start with "MZ"; self-extracting ZIPs for other operating systems may similarly be preceded by executable code for extracting the archive's content on that platform.)
