Interstate 81 (I-81) is an 855.02-mile-long (1,376.02 km) Interstate Highway. In the US state of Virginia, I-81 runs for 324.92 miles (522.91 km), making the portion in Virginia longer than any other state's portion of the route. It is also the longest Interstate Highway within the borders of Virginia.
Harrisonburg was named for Thomas Harrison (1704–1785), an early settler. [20]The earliest documented English exploration of the area prior to settlement was the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe Expedition, led by Lt. Gov. Alexander Spotswood, who reached Elkton, and whose rangers continued and in 1716 likely passed through what is now Harrisonburg.
In 2003, Walmart's relocation to the new Harrisonburg Crossing shopping center left the Valley Mall with a large amount of vacant space. This space remained vacant through 2003 and 2004. In early 2005, the former Walmart, as well as the food court, were demolished to make way for new retail tenants.
