The diocese's first bishop was John Strachan, who became Bishop of Toronto in 1839, after being ordained in the Anglican Church in 1803 and becoming Archdeacon of York in 1827. Alexander Croft Shaw M.A. (26 June 1846 – 13 March 1902) was a minister of the Anglican Church of Canada. He is remembered as Archdeacon Shaw, minister to the British Legation in Tokyo and a leading figure in the early years of the Anglican Church in Japan.
Colin Robert Johnson SCP (born 1952) is the former Anglican archbishop of Toronto and Moosonee, and he served as Metropolitan of the Ecclesiastical Province of Ontario from 2009 to 2018. He was the 11th Bishop of Toronto, the largest diocese in the Anglican Church of Canada.

Walker was educated at University of Toronto. Ordained in the 1930s, his first post was a curacy in Guelph. After that he served at several parishes in Toronto. He was Rector of St Luke, Peterborough, Ontario [2] from 1956 to 1972; and its Archdeacon from 1962.
The diocese was founded in 1862, when it was divided from the Diocese of Toronto. In 1866, there was one archdeacon: H. Patton, Archdeacon of Ontario. [2] Until 1896 it included the present-day Diocese of Ottawa. Its first bishop, John Lewis, a Church of Ireland cleric, was the first bishop consecrated in Canada rather than England.
