The factory mag needs a little honing before you shoot it (there are lots of tutorials on this), once done you should be fine. The one issue seems to be that the mag ears or lips can wear quickly, that is why I have a total of 4 mags for my 64 and may get a couple more. Once you start having problems call Savage, I heard that they will replace it.
I bought the Savage 64F at Dick's for $120 during Black Friday 2013. I could have bought a Marlin 795 for $160, Marlin XT for $190, or Mossberg 702 Plinkster for $160. My son took it to the range and said it was a jamomatic. I saw a post here that said new magazine springs are too stiff for the recoil spring, so load the mags and let them set ...
I just ordered and received 20 rnd mag for 62/64 IIRC $29.99 Buds Gun shop. OS1880, how did your 20 round mag work ? Ivan purchased a couple from Gun Mag Warehouse @ $30.99 . Tested with hi speed ammo, AGUILA, W-W, Wildcat and Federal. All functioned fine with 10 round mags.
Hi guys - I've seen this thread for a while and decided to add a bit. I've done several things to my 64 to improve functions. Pics for all are below. First since you're focused on the charging handle and mag release, I took an 1" self-tapping bolt - 1/4" I think - and rounded the hex head on a grinder.
G = 36.00 35.98 36.08 * G & H are measurements of the magazine detents that lock. H = 35.65 35.25 35.46. These numbers are BEFORE USE and the paint/finish is untouched. It may be that this will wear off and give more consistent measurement results after being used several times. G and H index the magazine in the Well.
I believe the 62 was the Stevens variant and the 64 is essentially the same gun, but branded Savage. Yep. Stevens made the 62 and Savage made the 64. They are the same guns. The Savage 64 has been produced in a number of variations, but to my knowledge, the Stevens only comes as a stock plinker with sporter barrel and open sights.

Model 64 magazine bolt hold modification. I am new here and have recently bought 2 64f rifles. One to replace my stolen remington 22lr years ago and another for my 16 yr old son. I know there are complaints about the magazines for several reasons. All seem relatively easy to fix, most seem due to sloppy magazine fit in the magazine housing ...
38. I put it together and shot it this morning and it's a much better rifle with the mods. I added a rew o-rings to the charging handle extension. I like it now. I used some JB weld hold a piece of .22 brass over the 4-40 screw I installed in the mag release. Much, much easier to use.
Forum Rules. Hello, I am new to the Savage model 64. I have only about 50 rounds through it and I have bent 5 .22 bullets. Here is my problem/question. I load the magazine, I chamber 1 and shoot, the next one will not feed and will keep the bolt wedged open. The bullet will be bent upwards above the barrel hole. I eject that and rack another one.
