State Route 42 (SR 42) was the former designation of a state highway in Tennessee that ran from US 70S in Sparta north through Cookeville, and ending in the town of Static at US 127 near the Kentucky state line. The number was decommissioned when SR 111 was created. Except for a few bypasses, SR 111 follows the entire route of former SR 42.
US 127 enters the state at Static on the state line separating Pickett County, Tennessee, from Clinton County, Kentucky, where it intersects Tennessee State Route 111 (SR 111, formerly SR 42) and Kentucky Route 1076 (KY 1076). It passes through Albany with a business route and bypass.
The highway winds it way through rural areas for several miles to intersect with SR 325, and then SR 295, before entering Static and intersecting both Kentucky Route 1076 and SR 111 immediately before crossing the state line into Kentucky, with SR 28 ending here and US 127 continuing into Kentucky.

The highways connects through Dunlap, Pikeville, Crossville, and Jamestown. Throughout its length, US 127 straddles the line between East Tennessee and Middle Tennessee.
Tennessee State Route 111, which intersects SR 325 in western Byrdstown, connects the town with Livingston to the southwest, and Static at the state line to the north. At Static, the highway terminates at an intersection with U.S. Route 127, with the latter continuing northward to Albany, Kentucky.
