Bartram's Garden is the oldest botanic garden to survive in the United States. [3] John Bartram (1699–1777), well-known in colonial American as a botanist, explorer, and plant collector, established the garden in September 1728 after purchasing a 102-acre (0.41 km 2) farm in Kingsessing Township, Philadelphia County for personal use. [21] [22]
The construction of Phase I of the H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens, named in honor of Mr. Smith's father, was completed in fall 2009 and the gardens were officially dedicated on April 25, 2010. The new Palmer Museum of Art, scheduled to open in June 2024, is located adjacent to the Arboretum.
It was established on 20 July 1877 and opened to the public on 20 May 1878. The old Raadsaal building was made available by the then Free State Volksraad for hosting the Museum collections. A new museum building was completed in 1913 and the official opening took place in 1915. Since 1881 the museum has been subsidised mainly by government.
