Waynesville is the county seat of Haywood County, North Carolina, United States. [4] It is the largest town in North Carolina west of Asheville. Waynesville is located about 30 miles (50 km) southwest of Asheville between the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains. As of the 2010 census, Waynesville had a population of 9,869. [5]

In 1930 US 70/NC 10 was swapped with NC 100 between Gibsonville and Burlington. Also around that time US 70/NC 10 was rerouted in downtown Salisbury via Innis Street to Main Street, leaving behind Fulton and Liberty streets. The county seat was designated at Mount Pleasant, which was renamed Waynesville in 1811. [7] The first county courthouse was completed the following year.
