Detective Robert "Bobby" Simone is a fictional character in the American television series NYPD Blue. Played by Jimmy Smits for four seasons, Simone is known for his sensitivity and street smarts, [ 1 ] [ 2 ] as well as his friendship with his detective-partner Andy Sipowicz .

In the first season of NYPD Blue, Sipowicz's partner is John Kelly, who leaves the force in 1994 after withholding evidence in a murder investigation of his lover Janice Licalsi. After Kelly's resignation, Bobby Simone becomes Sipowicz's partner. They soon become best friends; Sipowicz is devastated when Simone dies of a heart infection in 1998.
