Until 1930, the area was called Mong Kok Tsui (芒角嘴). [3] The current English name is a transliteration of its older Chinese name 望角 (Jyutping: mong 6 gok 3; IPA: [mɔːŋ˨ kɔːk˧]), or 芒角 (Jyutping: mong 4 gok 3; IPA: [mɔːŋ˨˩ kɔːk˧]), which is named for its plentiful supply of ferns in the past when it was a coastal region.

Yau Tsim District and Mong Kok District merged to become Yau Tsim Mong District in 1994.
The district was once called Yau Ma Tei District. It was renamed Yau Tsim District from 1 April 1988 to "remove any misconception that Tsim Sha Tsui was an administrative district separate from Yau Ma Tei". [5] Yau Tsim District and Mong Kok District were merged in 1994 to form the new Yau Tsim Mong District.
