Etowah Indian Mounds are a 54-acre (220,000 m 2) archaeological site in Bartow County, Georgia, south of Cartersville. Built and occupied in three phases, from 1000–1550 CE , the prehistoric site is located on the north shore of the Etowah River .

The archaeological park portion of the site is administered by the University of Alabama Museums and encompasses 185 acres (75 ha), consisting of 29 platform mounds around a rectangular plaza. [ 3 ] The site was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.

The Cherokee Tribe of Northeast Alabama (CTNEAL), formerly the Cherokees of Jackson County, is a state-recognized tribe in Alabama. They have about 3,000 members. [ 3 ] The tribe has a representative on the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission and the Inter-Tribal Council of Alabama.

No list could ever be complete of all Cherokee settlements; however, in 1755 the government of South Carolina noted several known towns and settlements. Those identified were grouped into six "hunting districts:" 1) Overhill, 2) Middle, 3) Valley, 4) Out Towns, 5) Lower Towns, and 6) the Piedmont settlements, also called Keowee towns, as they were along the Keowee River.
