John Adolph Emil Eberson c. 1912. John Adolph Emil Eberson (January 2, 1875 – March 5, 1954) [1] was an Austrian-American architect best known for the development and promotion of movie palace designs in the atmospheric theatre style. He designed over 500 theatres in his lifetime, earning the nickname "Opera House John".
The United Arts Council of Greensboro raised $550,000 to purchase the building from Jefferson Pilot at a bargain price. The United Arts Council refurbished the Theatre before reopening it as a community arts performing arts center in 1978. [4] In 1981, a mentally disturbed woman started a fire at the theatre and necessitated a second refurbishment.
