I remember going to Meyerland Plaza as a child in the 1970s when it was an open-air mall. It wasn't very impressive to me, compared to Sharpstown Mall. JCPenny was there in 1960, but not anchoring the end like you remember. It was at west end of plaza facing Beechnut, in a much smaller lease space.
Although the previous renovation job on Meyerland Plaza is outmoded, I don't think many of the stores there are suffering for lack of customers. Even people who live in million dollar mansions shop at places like Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, SteinMart, etc. Anyone who wants upper-end merchandise will find plenty of options just a short drive ...
Posted August 8, 2008. During the 1980's this cafe was located in back of the store Woolworth next door to the cobbler's shop in Meyerland plaza. My dad would always get his shoes fixed in the shop and go next door to the Rumble Seat to have a drink at the bar.

The restaurant I remember was on the far south side of Meyerland Plaza, close to the stand alone theater. I remember it being called the Houston Oil Company. The food was good but I only ate there if I was dating a girl that lived in that part of town. Edit: Houston Oil Company Restaurant - Booze & Eatery
(And two years before, in February of 1986, there was another Chronicle story about the memorial plaque that once stood at Meyerland Plaza) "After Herod's death, people in the neighborhood collected about $3,000 for the Herod children's education. The Houston Independent School District named a school in his memory.
It went over the school and crashed in an open field not very far away. The pilot was killed because the plane was too low for him to eject safely. HISD renamed that school for Capt Herod, and the school children planted the memorial tree in Herod's memory at Meyerland Plaza, which is a considerable distance from the school.
