Leyland Trucks is a medium- and heavy-duty truck manufacturer based in Leyland, Lancashire, United Kingdom.It can trace its origins back to the original Leyland Motors, which was founded in 1896, and subsequently evolved into British Leyland.
Leyland Motors Limited (later known as the Leyland Motor Corporation) was an English vehicle manufacturer of lorries, buses and trolleybuses.The company diversified into car manufacturing with its acquisitions of Triumph and Rover in 1960 and 1967, respectively.
At the same time, Leyland Trucks introduced the Landtrain, the first in a series of vehicles developed specifically for export markets. [22] A rationalisation of the model ranges also took place around this time. In 1980, British Leyland was still producing three cars in the large family car sector—the Princess 2, Austin Maxi and Morris Marina.
The first six production vehicles were handed over for acceptance in July 1990, with deliveries to the MoD commencing in August 1990. [2] [3] Production was based at the Leyland Trucks Assembly Plant in Lancashire, using largely British-sourced components. Contracted deliveries were completed in April 1995 after 4,200 vehicles had been delivered.
While one of the trials vehicles which served in the Vietnam War was branded with the Scammell name, most of the remaining units were branded Leyland. Two trailer specifications were used, a 24-wheel float with 16 wheel dolly trailer for transporting the Australian Centurion tank or US Patton tank in Vietnam. [ 10 ]
