During the late 1970s, on Data General Nova and Eclipse systems, the World Computer Corporation (doing credit union applications) created a date format with a 16-bit date field, which used seven bits for the year, four bits for the month, and five bits for the day. This allowed dates to be directly comparable using unsigned functions.
