Cavendish Square is a shopping centre in Claremont, Cape Town. It was at the time the largest upscale centre to open in Cape Town and was a project of Stuttafords department store. Original tenants included a full-line Stuttaford's store, a Greatermans department store, whose space was later taken by Garlicks. The centre opened September 7, 1972.
Claremont remained predominantly residential until the early 1970s, when commercial development began. A major shopping mall, named Cavendish Square, was opened in 1973, and other shopping centres followed.
In December 2010 demolition of 40% of mall was completed, effectively removing its southern end. The mall was reduced to 250,000 square feet (23,000 m 2) of space (for let) with room for 55 stores and space for a small indoor children's play area.
