Eastern Michigan University's first student union was McKenny Union, first proposed by President Charles McKenny in 1924. McKenny Union opened in 1931, and was the first student union on the campus of a teachers' college. [9] In the early 2000s, EMU began to look at a possible expansion and renovation of McKenny Union.
Eastern Michigan University established the College of Human Services in 1975. Eventually the university changed the name to the College of Health and Human Services on April 21, 1982. [47] The most recent college of the university is the Honors College founded in 2005. [48] Its predecessor program, the EMU Honors Program, was founded in 1984. [48]

In the early 2000s, Eastern Michigan began to develop concepts for the expansion of McKenny Union due to its limited space and services in comparison to the university's growing student population. These plans were later dropped due to the high cost of renovating the existing structure to meet the needs of the university.
In 1937, eight faculty and staff members at the Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science founded the state-chartered Michigan State College Employees Credit Union (MSCECU). Its assets and ledgers were kept in a desk drawer at the College's administration building. [1]
