Wadena County Historical Society Museum. The newly organized Minnesota Legislature created the county on June 11, 1858. A settlement began at the future city of Wadena in 1871, [2] and by 1873 a post office was in operation there. [3] The settlement was designated the county seat when the state legislature organized the county on February 21, 1873.

Mars, founder of Mars, Incorporated, was born in Hancock, Minnesota but lived in Wadena around the time of his son Forrest's birth in 1904. Forrest Mars Sr., son of Frank C. Huntersville Township is a township in Wadena County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 128 at the 2000 census. The unincorporated place also called Huntersville is located in this township, at the junction of County Roads 18 and 25. Most of Huntersville State Forest is located within this township as well.
The village of Shell City was established by William E. Kindred as the Kindred post office in 1879. The townsite was then sold to Francis M. Yoder and Sewall Chandler in 1881 and the name was changed to Shell City in 1882.
