Katherine (Nina Dobrev) calls Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and tells him that she knows where Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Klaus (Joseph Morgan) are. Damon gets Elena and go to Chicago to find Stefan. At Chicago, Damon takes Elena to Stefan's old apartment and shows her all the names of Stefan's victims back in the 1920s when he was "The Ripper".

Ian Somerhalder was cast as Damon Salvatore at the end of March 2009, six months before the premiere of the series. [1] The initial casting call for the character required an actor in his early- to mid-twenties to play a "darkly handsome, strong, charming, and smug vampire who can go from casual and playful to pure evil in less than a heartbeat."
However, Jeremy witnesses Stefan kill Vicki (after Damon turned her into a vampire). At Elena's request, Damon makes Jeremy forget this, and Jeremy becomes more stable and stops using drugs. Jeremy then starts a relationship with a vampire named Anna, but John Gilbert, Jeremy's uncle, kills Anna at the end of season one.
Elena sneaks into the basement getting herself in trouble before Damon appears to save her. They find Stefan and Harper and they free them. Damon goes to distract Frederick, who already got suspicious that something is going on, while Elena helps Stefan to get out. Damon fights with Frederick and two other vampires when Alaric shows up to help him.
Stefan informs Caroline (Candice Accola) of Damon's secret, and Caroline tells Elena (Nina Dobrev). Damon also is informed by Stefan that Elena, the love of his life, has compelled away all of her positive memories of him after accepting his loss. Damon attempts to meet with Elena, but Elena refuses and attempts to avoid Damon altogether.
Popsugar also comments on the development of the relationship between Damon and Elena: "Elena and Damon's relationship is growing in baby steps, and their current stage is as allies while they tend to locked-up Stefan. They even get to a place of good-naturedly joking with each other. I loved Damon's "Ew, gross!"
