Woman With Dead Child is a 1903 etching by Käthe Kollwitz. Its subject was influenced by her experiences in an underserved sector of Berlin as a physician's wife where disease and infant mortality rate were high. [1] The image is often considered as Käthe Kollwitz's most famous depiction of war. [2]
Mother and Child is a public artwork by the Estonian-British artist Dora Gordine, located at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA), which is near downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. The cast bronze artwork was created in 1964 and portrays a woman kneeling beside a small child, both figures displaying joyful poses and expressions.
The Child wears only a white cloth. The babe is being handed to its mother by an angel, in the figure of a young boy, wearing white and red, whose wings are barely in scene. As the Mother and Child gaze at each other, the angel gazes directly toward the observer.
There have been nude sculptures of heavily pregnant women by, among others, Damien Hirst, with The Virgin Mother (now at Lever House in New York) [50] and Verity, 2012, [51] and Ron Mueck, whose Pregnant Woman (2002) is a 2.5-metre-tall sculpture of a naked pregnant woman clasping her hands above her head, now in the National Gallery of Australia.
Munch completed the work after visiting the Hôpital Saint-Louis in Paris, where he saw a woman crying for her child with the disease. The baby in the painting is lifeless, pale and covered in spots. The mother, whose hands and patterned skirt are especially prominent, has a tearful red face and sits on a bench in front of a green background.
